Division 1: Title Race Heats Up
The race for the prestigious Division 1 title took several twists throughout the weekend, but reigning eight-time champion Ryan Smith remains the driver to beat with just two events left. Smith started strong, shattering the lap record in Saturday’s qualifying session to secure pole position. However, disaster struck in the first race as a sudden engine failure at Coram not only cost him the lead but also took out his closest rival, David Jenkins. Both were forced to retire.
With Smith and Jenkins sidelined, the race resumed under neutral conditions, and it was Steven Powell who took the lead. But Michael Oliver stole the spotlight with a thrilling charge through the pack, eventually passing Powell with a bold move at Coram to claim his first victory of the season. Stuart Oliver followed suit in the next race, taking an impressive win for Team Oliver Racing after a masterclass performance that saw him cross the line ahead of Jenkins and John Bowler.
Smith’s weekend seemed in jeopardy after his engine failure, but his team worked tirelessly overnight to install a new engine. Their efforts paid off as Smith stormed back in Sunday’s third race, winning by nearly 20 seconds. David Smith also impressed with a season-best second-place finish, followed by Michael Oliver.
Race four brought more drama when Smith, despite another strong drive, was penalized for exceeding track limits, dropping him to third and handing the win to Powell. However, Powell’s victory was short-lived as he was also penalized for gaining an unfair advantage, allowing Michael Oliver to take his second win of the weekend.
In the final race, Smith made amends, securing his second win of the weekend. Bowler took a career-best second place, while Jenkins battled hard to claim third.
