Fruehauf has reached another significant milestone in its manufacturing journey with the installation of a second large-scale robotic welding cell at its Grantham production facility.
Following the successful implementation of its first robotic welding station for carbon steel chassis components in 2025, the company is now expanding its automation capabilities with a bespoke aluminium welding system, developed in partnership with Valk Welding.
Designed specifically for the production of aluminium tipper body floors and sidewalls, the new robotic welding cell introduces cutting-edge technology that will enhance production quality, improve efficiency and support long-term manufacturing growth.
A key feature of the installation is Valk Welding’s Arc-Eye seam tracking system. Using advanced camera technology, the system continuously monitors the welding seam and adjusts the robot’s path in real time throughout the welding process. This level of precision is particularly important when welding aluminium, where the material’s high thermal conductivity can lead to distortion as heat is applied.
The installation also incorporates integrated source extraction for welding fumes, ensuring compliance with the latest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements while providing a cleaner and safer working environment for employees.
The robotic cell is currently undergoing testing, with welding programmes being developed, refined and optimised. Fruehauf expects the first robot-welded aluminium floors and sidewalls to enter production later this month, with the complete serial production system scheduled to be fully operational by the end of the year.



The investment extends beyond the robotic welding cell itself. As part of the wider project, Fruehauf has also invested in new assembly jigs engineered and manufactured by its in-house team, additional cranes and lifting equipment, and new machinery for aluminium extrusion cutting.
Once fully implemented, the new system will transform the welding process by automating approximately 12.5 hours of previously manual work on every tipper body, accounting for around 25% of the total welding operation and delivering a noticeable change in precision and consistency across the entire manufacturing process.
The company’s first robotic welding installation has already demonstrated the benefits of automation, delivering consistently high welding quality, improved fume control and increased production availability. These successes have reinforced Fruehauf’s commitment to investing in advanced manufacturing technologies that improve both product quality and operational efficiency.
Importantly, the company views automation as a means of supporting its workforce rather than replacing it. Employees previously carrying out repetitive, physically demanding welding operations will be redeployed into more specialised and bespoke fabrication roles where their skills and craftsmanship are better utilised. This shift not only allows Fruehauf to focus manual expertise on higher-value, more varied work, but also reduces the need for long hours of manual welding, contributing to improved wellbeing and a more sustainable working environment for its teams.
The successful installation has been made possible through the combined efforts of Fruehauf’s engineering and production teams, including robot programmers Andriy and Krzysztof, whose dedication to learning and implementing the new technology has been instrumental throughout the project. The company also recognises the work of the team responsible for completing the required building modifications on schedule, alongside the continued support and expertise provided by Valk Welding.
